- Rehabilitation of the Hanson-Taylor-Wright Heritage Site
In 2007, the National Capital Commission (NCC) acquired the historic Wright-Scott house and gardens, located on the Hanson-Taylor-Wright heritage site in the Ruisseau de la Brasserie (Brewery Creek) sector of Gatineau. The NCC is pleased to contribute to the preservation of this prestigious property — a symbol of the history of Canada’s Capital Region — through the protection of its natural, historical and countryside character.
The house at 16 Hanson Street, on the same property, was also acquired by the NCC at the same time. Built in the 1950s, it is now vacant and it presents a risk for public safety. The condition of the house has deteriorated to the point that renovation would be too costly.
An assessment by the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office (FHBRO) concluded that, based on FHBRO criteria, the house has no heritage value. The NCC has also consulted the Société d’histoire de l’Outaouais and the Association du Patrimoine du Ruisseau de la Brasserie, which share the same opinion. The NCC has obtained the necessary approval from the City of Gatineau to demolish the house and rehabilitate the site to return it to its original state, which includes enlarging the grounds.
The NCC plans to pay tribute to the occupants of the Wright-Scott house and highlight the historical importance of this heritage site in Canada’s Capital Region. This will involve promoting a possible use for the site that respects its rich past, as well as complements and accords with the surrounding community. A vocation study has been initiated, and the NCC will involve the community and interest groups at the appropriate time to ensure that the future use of the site meets with community approval.
Demolition: work period and impact
The demolition work will take place over a period of about two weeks in February. This will likely involve truck traffic in the neighbourhood, and measures will be in place to reduce the amount of dust and noise. Work will be undertaken in compliance with the standards of the City of Gatineau. The landscaping, which will have no significant impact for the neighbourhood, will begin in the spring.
The NCC thanks you for your patience and understanding during the undertaking of this work. For information during this period, we invite you to contact the NCC at 613-239-5000, 1-866-661-3530 (tty) or .
