Bike Lanes and Bike Box

Improved commuting experience for all

Pedestrians and cyclists to the Capital Region can enjoy safer access to eastbound and westbound bike lanes, a bike box and pedestrian crosswalks on Wellington Street, at the Portage Bridge intersection.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) and the City of Ottawa, once again, worked together to improve the bicycle commuting experience in the core of the Capital as well as provide safer access to both sides of Wellington Street, at the Portage Bridge intersection.

Bike Lanes and Bike Box

The new bike lanes are located between Bay Street and the Portage Bridge / Wellington Street intersection and connect to the existing Portage Bridge bidirectional bike lanes and the Bay Street northbound bike lane. The westbound bike lane is segregated and is a two-year pilot project that coincides with the City of Ottawa’s Laurier Avenue segregated bike lane pilot project. The eastbound bike lane is not segregated.

The bike box, at the Bay and Wellington intersection gives cyclists a clear and safe track for left and right-hand turns through the intersection when the traffic signal turns green. When the signal is red, cyclists travelling in the cycling lane will stop inside the bike box. Once the light turns green, they may proceed but should be mindful of right-turning motorists.

Pedestrian Crosswalks

Pedestrian crosswalks at the Portage Bridge / Wellington Street intersection provide a safe way to cross the intersection with pedestrian controlled traffic signals.

Pedestrians will benefit from enhanced access to venues on both sides of Wellington Street, such as Lebreton Flats, the Canadian War Museum and the Mill Street Brewery.
