A key feature of the Capital experience is the extensive green spaces within the urban core. Central to the Capital’s Green Spaces Network are the Capital Parks, the Capital Pathway and the parkways managed by the NCC.

Parks

The Capital Parks in Ottawa and Gatineau offer stunning views of the Capital’s skyline and waterways. Some parks feature historical displays, and others have lookouts, picnic tables and other amenities to help people enjoy the Capital outdoors. Several parks are the stages for national events and festivals such as Canada Day and Winterlude. Learn more about the Capital Parks in the Points of Interest section.

Paths

The green spaces of Canada’s Capital Region are connected by some 236 kilometres of recreational paths. The paths are designed for walking, running, cycling and in-line skating and they connect to the Trans Canada Trail and the Route verte trail networks. The paths join the Capital’s parks, gardens, museums and attractions. They are also excellent routes to downtown Ottawa and Gatineau and are becoming a popular way to commute to work for cyclists.

Parkways

The Capital’s green spaces are also connected by over 90 kilometres of scenic parkways. The parkways follow the Capital’s canal and rivers and extend into Gatineau Park and the Greenbelt. The parkways are more than roads — they are gateways into Canada’s Capital Region and offer beautiful views of the Canadian landscape.
