Anishinabe Scout
The figure of this scout is located in Major’s Hill Park, in Ottawa. It highlights the contributions of First Nations peoples to the development of Canada.
This work once stood at the foot of the Champlain monument to symbolize how Aboriginal people helped Champlain in his exploration of the Ottawa River.
The statue was created in 1918 by Hamilton MacCarthy. The artist’s original intention was to have the guide kneeling in a canoe. However, the citizens’ committee that sponsored the work had not raised enough funds to complete the original design, and an alternative solution was found.
