3.6 kilometres of the Skateway will be open.

Canada's Capital Region — As of tomorrow, Friday, January 20 at 8 am, the National Capital Commission (NCC) announces that 3.6 kilometres of the Rideau Canal Skateway, between the Corktown Footbridge (Somerset Street) and the Bank Street Bridge, will be open to the public. Skaters will be able to access the Skateway by using all the entrances along the opened section.

On January 15, 2012, the NCC opened 2.2 kilometres of ice between the Pretoria Bridge and the Bank Street Bridge. The opened section will be longer by 1.4 kilometre.

The NCC is working to open the remaining sections of the world’s largest skating rink as soon as ice conditions are safe and weather permits. Pedestrians and skaters are asked not to venture onto the closed sections of the Skateway where ice is considered unsafe.

Managed by the NCC since the 1970-1971 season, the 7.8-kilometre Rideau Canal Skateway receives, on average, one million visits each year. The world-famous ice surface becomes one of the official sites for Winterlude, the Capital’s winter celebration, which will be held from February 3 to 20, 2012.
